Can You Learn Kung Fu Online?

27 September 2026 • 5 min read

Quick Answer

Yes and no. Online you can learn the basic movements, the shape of the forms and some of the key points of a system.

But real skill comes from training with people: a teacher who pushes you, and partners who make you react. No video can do that.

If there’s no school near you, online is a good place to start. Just treat it as the start of the journey, not the whole of it.

It’s one of the most common questions I get asked, and it deserves an honest answer rather than a sales pitch either way.

The honest answer is: it depends what you want to learn, and what you already know. Someone with years of hands-on training can pick up a lot from a video. A complete beginner can pick up the shapes, but not much more.

What Can You Actually Learn Online?

More than people think, and less than some people claim.

  • Basic movements: stances, footwork and hand and leg combinations.

  • The outline of the forms: the order of the movements and the general shape.

  • Certain points of the system: ideas and concepts you can think about and practise.

  • Fitness and conditioning routines you can do at home.

If all you want is to learn a form and practise some combinations up and down the room, then yes, you can learn that online quite easily.

What Can’t You Learn From a Video?

The part that turns movement into martial art.

Take the forms. Watch Mantis forms online and you’ll notice something: they’re often all performed the same way, with the same power and the same speed. But that isn’t how a form is designed.

  • A form has its own life: fast and slow, tension and no tension.

  • Those changes come from the principles inside the form, not from the shapes.

  • Without someone to show you where they are, you end up copying the outside and missing the inside.

Every teacher also teaches slightly differently, and every style has its own variations. Those details are passed on person to person, not screen to screen.

Why Do You Need a Training Partner?

Because your training partner is the one who pushes you, and you push them back. That’s where skill is actually built.

  • A partner gives you real pressure, so you learn to react instead of just remember.

  • Every person moves differently, so the more people you train with, the more you learn.

  • Even a teacher learns from his students, because every student acts differently.

A video can’t push you. It can’t react to what you do. It will never surprise you, and being surprised is how you learn.

Why Train With the Instructor in Person?

When you train with the instructor, he pushes you, and you have to react to his movements. That’s when you really start to understand martial arts.

It doesn’t matter what style you learn. To get any real depth or real skill, you must have the teacher.

What If There’s No School Near You?

Then online training is your best option, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

  • Start with videos and online classes to learn the basics and the shape of the system.

  • Practise consistently so you have a solid foundation.

  • At some point, get to a seminar or some lessons in person, even if it means travelling. That’s where your foundation gets checked and corrected.

That’s exactly why we run our free online community, the Mantis Cyber Clan, alongside the school in Crawley. It’s a genuine starting point. It just isn’t the finish line.

Can You Become an Expert Online?

This is where I’ll be honest.

There are people who learn a style purely from videos, collect an online certificate and then present themselves as masters of that style, without ever having trained hands-on with anybody. That doesn’t sit right with me.

  • A certificate is only worth how you earned it.

  • Understanding a principle means being able to use it against a real person, not just describe it.

  • If you’ve never been pushed by a teacher or a partner, you don’t yet know what you don’t know.

So if someone tells you they hold a black belt or a master’s title, it’s fair to ask one simple question: how did you get it, and who did you train with?

So, Can You Learn Kung Fu Online?

  • Yes: the basic movements, the outline of the forms and some key points of the system.

  • No: the principles, the reactions and the real skill. Those come from a teacher and training partners.

  • If there’s no school near you, online is a great start. Get to a class or seminar when you can.

  • Enjoy it, learn from it, just don’t mistake it for the whole art.

Online can start your journey. The training hall is where it really begins.
