Why Does Every New Student Do a Three-Hour Seminar First?

27 September 2026 • 4 min read

Quick Answer

Because dropping beginners into a busy evening class isn’t fair on anyone. It breaks the rhythm for the students already training, and the newcomer gets rushed.

The three-hour seminar gives you a small group of beginners (never more than nine), a proper pace, and time to ask every question you have.

You experience the Mantis training before you commit, and so do we.

Most martial arts clubs let you turn up to any class and “give it a go”. We don’t. Every new student starts with a three-hour seminar on a Sunday, and people sometimes ask why.

It’s a fair question, and the answer is simple.

What Went Wrong When New People Joined the Evening Class?

Over the years I’ve had people come in during the evening and join part of a class. To be honest, a lot of the time it didn’t work.

  • It hindered the class. Instead of training, the regular students were stopping to help a beginner find their feet.

  • It upset the rhythm. The students who were there to train couldn’t get into their work.

  • It wasn’t fair on the newcomer either. Squeezing someone into the corner of a class that’s already moving is no way to learn anything properly.

So the main reason is this: I don’t want new students disrupting my evening class, and I don’t want new students to have a rushed first experience either.

What Happens Instead?

You come to a three-hour seminar where everyone is a beginner. Nobody is ahead of you, and nobody is waiting for you to catch up.

  • Maximum of nine students. Ideally about six, so everyone gets proper attention.

  • Held on a Sunday, with no evening class going on around you.

  • Three full hours to teach you properly, at a pace everyone can follow.

Why Three Hours and Not One?

Because there’s no rush. With three hours we can teach you properly, so you actually understand what you’re doing rather than copying shapes.

  • There’s time to learn each drill before moving on.

  • You can ask any question you want while you’re training.

  • Halfway through we stop for a cup of tea, sit down and talk about what you’ve just done.

  • At the end we have another discussion, so you leave with every question answered.

Why Not Just Explain It on the Website?

Because it’s always best to experience what you’re going to learn. No amount of reading tells you what Mantis training feels like.

  • You feel the warm-ups, footwork, pad work, conditioning and power training for yourself.

  • You find out whether the training suits you before you commit to anything.

  • We get to see you train, and you get to see how we teach.

How Much Does It Cost?

The seminar is £49. It runs once a month for adults aged 18 and over, in Three Bridges, Crawley.

If you decide to join afterwards, regular training is £99 a month, and your kit (uniform, a bottle of dit da jow and a conditioning bag) comes as a joining bonus.

So Why the Seminar?

  • It protects the rhythm of the evening class for the students already training.

  • It gives you a proper start: small group, good pace, no pressure.

  • You experience the training and get every question answered before you decide.

That’s why we do it. It’s better for our students, and it’s better for you.
